Located 22 nautical miles (40 km) from Cairns, the same as the distance across the English Channel, and close to the outer reef systems, Michaelmas Cay is the largest of the uninhabited coral cays in the Cairns region; in fact it is huge in comparison.

Seastar is the first vessel to arrive at Michaelmas Cay. Very few tour vessels are now permitted access to this sensitive island and now there are only two which travel daily that are permitted the right to use and access the Cay.

Our second location where we stop is Hastings reef, part of the outer Great Barrier Reef.

Hastings Reef is located 30 nautical miles out from Cairns and is a typical outer reef, on most days a line of breakers marks where the deep ocean swells break onto the reef wall. The reef itself is shallow on top, with steep sides reminiscent of cliffs falling away into the surrounding water.

    The outer reef snorkeling colours and sea life were amazing. The staff were friendly. The boat could do with some maintenance

    OMG this was amazing! 4 of us went and we all had an experience of a lifetime. The whole experience was excellent… the staff were absolutely amazing, extremely professional while being so welcoming and friendly. If you are thinking of doing a reef tour, pick Seastar Cruises, you wont regret. The cost is well worth it because you get an amazing adventure along with great food, service and memories!

    Thanks for an awesome Reef trip today 09.10 2021, Scott and team were fabulous and helpful. The food was delicious. The reef was amazing, learnt so much from our snorkelling guide Kathryn (a marine biologist).

    Terrific day out on the reef with the crew of Seastar. Warm welcomes from all as we boarded the boat. Weather certainly wasn’t optimal with winds over 25knotts and 1-1/2m swell. Bumpy ride out. Once at reef the crew were very accomodating given the challenging situation. Snorkelling was still amazing. We didn’t get to go to Hastings Reef due to conditions but this was all explained to us well by the Captain and everyone was happy with the decision. Just being on the reef was an amazing experience. Crew did fantastic job all day in the conditions. Always had smiles on their faces and were extremely informative. Loved the small group environment (the main reason I went with Seastar).

    Amazing trip! 2 snorkel spots were brilliant lots of fish to see. Staff were fantastic very friendly and knowledgable. It was a beautiful day but very windy and the boat was very choppy on the way back, this didn’t spoil our day though.

    An incredible crew and mind blowing locations at Michaelmus Cay and Hastings Reef made for an amazing experience witnessing our Great Barrier Reef. Experienced divers guided as through the maze of coral and allowed us to wander on our own. Lunch was a buffet served by the crew with second helpings invited to anyone who wanted to. Professional friendly amazing crew. Highly recommend!

    Words are hard to find ! It was one of the best days..... and the reef was just in splendour,,,,,,,,, the colours! The staff were great, informative and me not being a strong swimmer put me at ease and I got to see it all, thanks to Em, and Jamie-Lee When back, going with them again! Everyone should do this!

    Great day out on the reef and Michaelmas Cay and Hastings with family. This was a repeat trip for us with Seastar with our first being in 2015. We came back because of our first trip was so good and we didn't want to go on one of the bigger boats which carry more people. We weren't disappointed! Really appreciated the personalised service, friendly and knowledgeable crew and we had an amazing day seeing all sorts of marine life at both locations. Highly recommend Seastar for a memorable experience. The lunch was also very tasty and enough for seconds if you wanted more!

    My day with Seastar was fantastic! If you are after a boat with fewer people and personalised service, then this is the trip for you. I had only booked for snorkelling, as I'm a bit rusty on my diving skills. I was intending on doing a dive refresher course (in a pool) before attempting to dive again. When I told Tim about this, he offered to take extra time with me on board and in the water to revise basic skills. I ended up doing 2 dives and now feel more confident again! Thanks to Tim for his friendly nature, patience and sense of fun. The crew were also wonderful with the snorkellers that were a bit nervous, and also the children on board. Those more confident were able to go off and do their own thing. Very knowledgable and friendly staff! Captain Jason is just wonderful and his attention to detail was evident. Both sites visited were magical and I would definitely go out with Seastar again. Thank, guys!
